My philosophy of civil service

Brothers and Sisters: Peace be with you!

Today I only wish to share this thought by the Swiss philosopher Henri Frédéric Amiel, which is found in his journal. Amiel’s thought encapsulates my own philosophy of civil service:

…Let the world think what it will of us, that’s its business. If they will not give us our lawful place until after our death, or maybe never, that’s their right. We should behave as though our country were grateful, as though the world were equitable, as though opinion were clear-sighted, as though life were just, as though men were good.

I’m going to frame it and hang it in my office, for me and others to see and be mindful.
